Have you always wanted to judge at barbecue contests but did not know how Well, here is your chance to become a Certified Kansas City Barbecue Society, KCBS BBQ Judge. The Nelsonville Area Chamber of Commerce along with the Kansas City Barbecue Society is offering a KCBS Barbecue Judging Class on Saturday, April 24, 2010. Students of this class will learn all aspects of competition barbecue judging, how to taste it, smell it, prod it and otherwise determine whether it is worthy of honor and cash prizes. After learning the guidelines of judging, the students will have a chance to judge for themselves. Barbecued meats in each category are prepared and presented competition style, so that the judges-to-be can test their knowledge as if they were at a competition. Barbecue judges are not paid, but many believe that the smoked meat they consume, about two pounds at each contest, is fair compensation. As barbecue competitions become more popular around the country, skilled judges are increasingly in demand. Certified KCBS judges receive preferential treatment when contest organizers are choosing judges.
